the u.s. navy has fully accounted for all unmanned vehicles operating in the middle east region. we have the latest developments now from cairo. a u.s. source says that if the iranians do have something, it is not an actively operating u.s. navy drone. what would that mean? could this actually be a fake? >> it could be. it's not clear right now, but iranian officials have a different story. we don't know when or how this u.s. drone was allegedly captured, but you can be sure iran is going to count this as a big intelligence victory over the u.s. you can also be sure they'll use this to portray the u.s. as the aggressor in the region. that's what iran has done for more than three decades. briefly, let's tell you about the reports from state media in iran. reports say iran captured a drone flying over the northern persian gulf waters after it allegedly flew into iranian airspace. this is a region close to iran's only nuclear power plant. a statement by iran's revolutionary guard said this happened over the past few days. the statement described the drone as a u.s.-made scan eagle. this is

the stunning military operation and the u.s. navy s.e.a.l. who heroically gave his life to help save a doctor kidnapped by the taliban. nbc's jim has the story. >>> he was a highly decorated navy veteran killed sunday in afghanistan. the s.e.a.l.s set out to rescue an american relief worker dr. dilip joseph kidnapped last week on the road east of kabul. joseph was held hostage at an enemy complex in laghman province. as they approached the compound on foot, they came under intense enemy fire, from ak 478s, heavy machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades. in the fierce battle the petty officer took a single bullet and later died from his wound. in the heat of that battle they miraculously rescued dr. joseph. he had earned a bronze star and two other awards. he's a native of monroeville, pennsylvania. he was widely admired by coaches and classmates alike. >> i remember nick real well. he was one of those guys you loved to have on your team. >> and he's a special, special person, so he won't be forgotten. >> reporter: dr. joseph works with an american relief organization morningstar providing f

beneficial to not only the u.s. navy and marine corps, but to the international community. >> thank you. another hand? >> [inaudible] my experience with the haiti response. in this casey i was working at the deputy principal committee level and working at the white house. but it was really the first opportunity for this administration to work with a very complex response, and then recognizing for us the supported commander was usaid that normally isn't in the emergency response business. so, it was an educational process of how to move forces and yet support usaid and the role of the country team and port au prince. so, it was very informative there. and to back up when we had the first no fooling hurricane that worked its way up the entire gulf coast, the principal committee calls that were generated during the haiti response were then turned around and then bringing all of the governors into a conference call with the president to make sure that all their needs were being met in the advance of a hurricane arrival. so, we really had all of government, from local all the way up to the w

. tonight one of the u.s. navy's deployed special forces commanders is dead. he was in afghanistan and military investigators are working on the belief that he took his own life. here's our pentagon correspondent barbara starr with what few details we have so far. >> reporter: very sad news this holiday weekend for u.s. navy s.e.a.l.s. the navy is investigating the death in afghanistan of one of its most senior deployed s.e.a.l. officers as an apparent suicide. a u.s. military official tells cnn. navy commander joe w price 42 years old, died december 22nd, while serving as the commanding officer of s.e.a.l. team 4. a group of more than 2 dozen commandos conducting combat operations in the southern command of the country. that u.s. military official who's directly familiar with the event said the family has been notified of the death, and has been notified and is being investigated as an apparent suicide. there is no indication at this time that commander price was involved in any military related investigations or any controversies the officials said. all indications are, when he d
